Question: What is an archaeologist?

Answer: An Archaeologist is somebody who studies how people lived in the past by examining the objects (artefacts) and structures (monuments) that they used. Sometimes an archaeologist will have to carefully dig (excavate) the soil to reveal the objects and structures which have become hidden over time. Anything that people did in the past which left a trace behind them can be studied by an archaeologist.

An archaeologist can work in many different areas, for instance some work in laboratories while others work in museums , county councils and heritage agencies. One thing archaeologists do not do is dig up dinosaurs. Dinosaurs died out millions of years before the first humans, and the people who study them are called paleontologists.
