Ask me a question

I live in Ballynamuck townland which means the town of the pigs.

I think that people here in the past  must have kept a lot of pigs for meat or for trade with other people.

During the winter I live in a den.  I made my den in an old underground tunnel  I found in the middle of a ringfort. The ringfort is on the south side of a hill just below the top and I have great views over all the countryside. The ringfort is circular about 30m in diameter and it is  enclosed by an earthen bank which is 1.5 m high and about 1m wide at the top.  The underground tunnel I live in is called a souterrain and I think it was where the people who lived in the ringfort  long ago used to store their food for the winter.

The name of the fort is Lisnagat which means the fort of the wild cats! I certainly haven’t seen any wild cats here…. but maybe a family of wild cats lived in my souterrain many years ago before I moved in.
Maybe one of the previous tenants!

My Den!

From the top of the bank on a clear day I can see another ringfort across the valley where another fox friend of mine sometimes resides. I once heard a story that the two ringforts were meant to be  joined by an underground tunnel but I do not think that this is true…..it would be a great way of visiting my friend if it was!

Down at the base of the hill in an area of marshy ground there is a  low horse-shoe shaped mound about 80cm high.  The mound is made up of black burnt stones. This is called a fulacht fia and it is where people in the past used to heat water for cooking food and  washing. I like lying on the mound on warm days as it is great place to relax because the sun heats up the stones!!

I hope you liked my own place ….I love it!  Now tell my about yours…
